An end-to-end encrypted messaging service owned by Facebook. WhatsApp is widely used across the globe, therefore many contacts will already be users on the app.
WhatsApp is completely free — with no fees or subscriptions — because it uses your phone's 5G, 4G, 3G, 2G, EDGE, or Wi-Fi connection instead of your cell plan's voice minutes or text plan
WhatsApp messages and calls are end-to-end encrypted, but the app does not protect metadata. There is a feature that allows users to back messages up to a cloud-based server; NDI strongly recommends disabling this feature as it essentially undos the benefits of end-to-end encryption since cloud servers are subject to security breaches such as hacking.
