The Global Network Initiative (GNI) is thrilled to announce that the National Democratic Institute (NDI) has joined GNI as a civil society member.

NDI is a non-profit, non-partisan, non-governmental organization that works in partnership around the world to strengthen and safeguard democratic institutions, processes, norms and values to secure a better quality of life for all. NDI envisions a world where democracy and freedom prevail, with dignity for all. NDI and its local partners work to promote openness and accountability in government by building political and civic organizations, safeguarding elections, and promoting citizen participation. The Institute brings together individuals and groups to share ideas, knowledge, experiences and expertise that can be adapted to the needs of individual countries and has worked in more than 150 countries with more than 50 field offices working to strengthen and support democracy around the globe.

“We are happy to join the Global Network Initiative, the leading voice in bringing transparency, accountability and smart decision making across sectors,” said Moira Whelan, Director of Democracy and Technology at the National Democratic Institute. “Democracy requires a free, open internet where all citizens can voice their opinions, share, and debate. NDI’s partners around the world are on the front lines of speaking out against authoritarianism, and through GNI their voices will be heard in C suites and reflected in better approaches to creating an internet that works for everyone.”

“I am incredibly excited to welcome NDI into GNI,” said GNI Executive Director Jason Pielemeier.
“We are particularly keen to collaborate with the Democracy and Technology Division, which brings unique reach, insight, and capacity based on its global engagement on digital rights.”
