Amara Shaker-Brown


Program Officer

Amara is a Program Officer on the Democracy and Technology team. With a multifaceted background spanning diverse sectors and countries, she has committed her career to advancing open and free online spaces, gender equity, and a safer information system for all marginalized groups. Amara manages initiatives promoting democratic online information spaces and has run programs combating online violence against women and gendered disinformation across numerous countries. Simultaneously, as the Lead Shop Steward, Amara advocates for workplace equity and productivity for union employees at NDI. She has previously worked in the tech and education sectors, promoting women’s representation in technical spaces and advocating for underrepresented populations in the U.S. healthcare system. Amara holds an M.A. from SOAS, University of London, in International Studies and Diplomacy and a B.A. from the University of Virginia, and enjoys sailing, traveling, and sewing in her free time.
