In Casablanca, Islah.city has taken root as a transformative initiative, reshaping how citizens engage with their local government. It is not just a tool for reporting issues; it is a catalyst for change and an embodiment of the power of civic participation. This platform, which leverages the FixMyStreet open-source platform originally developed by MySociety in the UK, transcends traditional barriers to civic participation to seamlessly connect citizens with their local government.

Digital organizing is a key component of any successful political campaign. It involves using technology to mobilize supporters, raise funds, communicate messages, and get out the vote. It can also be a powerful tool for governing. Digital tools enable members of parliament to manage constituent correspondence or even manage interactions with citizens. However, not all digital organizing tools are created equal. Some are tailored to specific contexts, while others are better suited to business or sales applications.

What do you believe to be the most pressing political issues of our times? Political parties and civil society organizations need to know citizens’ perspectives on the most important issues and how to address them – but often they make decisions based on ad-hoc conversations, the views of insiders or staff members, or out-of-date assumptions. In the lead up to the 2023 elections in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), a group of NDI partners sought to understand their fellow citizens’ views on the key political and electoral questions of the time.

I’m delighted that the NDI DemTech team has hit another major milestone with a fresh iteration of the Democracy Toolkit, DemTools. For anyone reading this blog, it’s probably self-evident that we live in an increasingly digital world, and for an expanding majority of humans everywhere on Earth being able to engage online is a requirement to make best use of their abilities and maximise their impact.
